Le phare de Pointe-au-Père

C'est à Pointe-au-Père, où le golfe et le fleuve Saint-Laurent se confondent; que les navires devaient changer de pilote. L'importance de l'endroit pour la navigation fluviale amena le gouvernement à y ériger au moins trois phares. Le premier qu'on connaisse avec certitude fut bâti en 1859 mais détruit dans un incendie en 1867. Le second, une construction de bois à trois étages avec lanternes sur le toit, fut remplacé en 1909 par le phare actuel qui a été renforcé de béton armé.

Here, where the Gulf narrows to the St. Lawrence River, was the point where inbound vessels took on the river pilot. Because of its importance to river navigation, Pointe-au-Père, has been the site of at least three lighthouses. The first of which there is definite record was built in 1859 and destroyed by fire in 1867. Its successor, a three-storey frame house with a lantern of the roof, was replaced by the present reinforced concrete structure in 1909.
