Synthèse
William Marsden est né à Bolton, Angleterre, le 18 février 1807.
Avec sa famille, Marsden s'établit au Bas-Canada en 1812. Il étudie la médecine à Londres, en Angleterre, jusqu'en 1830. Il pratique ensuite la médecine à Québec et s'intéresse notamment à la question du choléra. Il découvre que cette maladie est contagieuse vers 1847.
Il est l'auteur de Facts and Observations Connected with the Management of the Marine and Emigrant Hospital, Quebec (1852) et de Plan of Quarantine for Cholera (1866).
Il est décédé à Québec, le 16 décembre 1885.
