Né en Suède, le 6 mars 1716, Pehr Kalm est le fils de Gabriel Kalm, homme d'Église finlandais, et de Catherine Ross.
Kalm réside en Finlande après 1721. Il fréquente l'université d'Åbo à partir de 1735 et y étudie l'histoire naturelle de la Finlande. Il y donne des leçons et dirige les plantations expérimentales du baron Sten Carl Bielke à partir de 1740. La même année, il entre à l'université d'Upsalet et étudie notamment avec le savant Anders Celsius. Il est choisi pour aller faire l'étude de la botanique de l'Amérique du Nord.
Kalm se rend en Angleterre, puis à Philadelphie en 1747 et 1748. Il arrive en Nouvelle-France via le fort Saint-Frédéric en 1749, puis à Montréal et Québec. Il y recueille des spécimens de plantes canadiennes. Il retourne ensuite dans les colonies britanniques, visite Niagara en 1750 et rentre en Europe en 1751.
Kalm est l'auteur d'un journal de voyage publié en trois volumes entre 1753 et 1761.
Il est décédé à Åbo, Turku, en Finlande, le 16 novembre 1779.
Il avait épousé, en 1750, Anna Margaretha Sandin.
