Synthèse
La librairie, maison d'édition et imprimerie Oliver and Boyd est fondée à Édimbourg, en Écosse, en 1801, par Thomas Oliver (1776-1853) et George Boyd (décédé en 1843). Thomas Oliver est d'abord apprenti chez l'imprimeur James Robertson, puis s'installe à son compte en 1799. Deux ans plus tard, il prend George Boyd comme associé.
Leurs catalogues, publiés de 1811 à 1841, proposent une série de livres pour enfants dans une vaste gamme de prix. La maison vend également des histoires abrégées avec des couvertures décorées et des livres de chant. Finalement, la maison propose des ouvrages sur le droit écossais, notamment The pocket lawyer : a practical digest of the laws of Scotland reducing all the most important branches of those laws to short and familiar propositions supported by references to approved authorities : with an appendix of forms of writings, law expenses. (1830).
