John Douglas Borthwick est né à Glencourse, près d'Édimbourg, en Écosse, en 1832.
Borthwick arrive en Amérique vers 1850 et enseigne au Haut-Canada, puis à Montréal. Il est ordonné pasteur de l'Église d'Angleterre en 1866 et dessert l'église St. Mary's, à Hochelaga (Montréal). Plus tard, il est l'aumônier protestant à la prison de Montréal.
Borthwick est l'auteur de nombreux ouvrages généraux ou de référence, portant notamment sur l'histoire de Montréal, dont Examples of Historical and Geographical Autonomiasis (1858), A Cyclopedia of History and Geography (1859), The Dominion Geography (1871), The History of Scottish Song (1874), Borthwick Castle, or Scenes from Scottish History (1880), Montreal, Its History (1875), History of Montreal and Commercial Registrar for 1885 (1885), History and Biographical Gazetteer of Montreal (1892), History of Montreal, Including the Streets of Montreal (1897), Authentic History of the Eight Prisons of Montreal (1907) et History of the Diocese of Montreal, 1850-1910 (1911).
Il est décédé à Montréal, le 14 janvier 1912.
