Le théâtre Granada

Ce théâtre est une remarquable illustration d'un cinéma d'atmosphère où, pour dépayser et charmer les spectateurs, était recréée l'ambiance romantique d'un jardin exotique. Conçu par l'architecte Daniel J. Crighton, le Granada est inauguré le 18 janvier 1929. Son spectaculaire décor, œuvre d'Emmanuel Briffa, comporte un plafond imitant la voûte céleste et une abondante ornementation peinte et en relief, évocation d'une cour intérieure espagnole. Le théâtre Granada, se distinguant par son bon état de conservation, est l'un des rares cinémas du genre qui subsistent au Canada.

The Granada Theatre

In this theatre, an outstanding example of an atmospheric cinema, the romantic ambience of an exotic garden was created to delight the audience and add to a sense of escape from the everyday. Designed by the architect Daniel J. Crighton, the Granada opened its doors on January 18, 1929. Its spectacular decor, the work of Emmanuel Briffa, includes a ceiling that imitates the night sky. Its extensive painted and three-dimensional ornamentation is meant to recall a Spanish inner courtyard. Remarkably well preserved, the Granada is one of the few atmospheric theatres still remaining in Canada.
