L'Atheneum Printing Office est fondée à Kingston, vers 1833, par Edward John Barker.
En 1833, Barker lance un périodique intitulé British Whig. Peu de temps après, il met en place l'Atheneum Printing Office, un atelier d'imprimerie spécialisé dans la production de travaux de ville, de brochures et de rapports annuels d'associations locales. À compter de 1838, l'atelier publie également quelques livres. Profitant du titre de capitale de la ville de Kingston, l'Atheneum Printing Office imprime, en 1843, le Journal de l'Assemblée législative de la province du Canada.
En 1846, Barker lance un nouveau périodique intitulé Barker's Canadian Monthly Magazine. Cette publication connaît un échec populaire et entraîne Barker au bord de la faillite l'année suivante. Il réussit néanmoins à conserver son premier périodique qui se nomme alors le Whig et qui devient un quotidien, en 1849. Toutefois, l'Atheneum Printing Office quitte le champ éditorial après 1847.
