George Stephen House

George Stephen (futur lord Mount Stephen), président de la Banque de Montréal et du Canadien Pacifique, se fit construire cette maison de style Renaissance par l'entrepreneur montréalais J. H. Hutchison d'après les plans de l'architecte W. T. Thomas. De nombreux artisans européens chargés en 1880 d'en orner l'intérieur, mirent trois ans à parachever ce splendide édifice victorien, assurément l'un des plus opulents et des plus élégants à Montréal. Le Mount Stephen Club en fit l'acquisition en 1926.

This magnificent Renaissance-style mansion was begun in 1880 for George Stephen (later Lord Mount Stephen), president of the Bank of Montreal and of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was designed by the noted architect, W. T. Thomas, and built by Montréal contractor J. H. Hutchison. Construction took three years and involved numerous craftsmen brought especially from Europe to work on its opulent interior. A fine reflection of the Victorian era, it was renowned in its day as one of Montréal's most lavishly elegant residences, and owes its survival to the Mount Stephen Club which bought the property in 1926.
